L-Tryptophan is a vital amino acid required for protein synthesis, and it occurs naturally in red meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products.

L-Tryptophan plays a crucial role in the functioning of various organs in the body. It cannot be produced by the body and must be obtained from the diet. Once L-tryptophan is ingested, the body converts a portion of it to 5-HTP, which then further converts to serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone that acts as a neurotransmitter, transmitting signals between nerve cells. Alterations in serotonin levels in the brain can affect mood.

Although people use L-tryptophan for various purposes, such as severe PMS symptoms, depression, insomnia, and other conditions, there is insufficient scientific evidence to support any of these uses.
